After a couple years off from major touring, I’m back on the road, joining Dan Mangan + Blacksmith for a month-long U.S. tour. We played our first show last night (Oct 25) in Philadelphia at Underground Arts. This version of the band is a trio with drummer Kenton Loewen, Dan and I. We’re supporting “Bear’s Den” from the UK. Should be a good time!
Here’s the full list of dates:

*Note: You’ll notice a bunch of Canadian dates further down the list. We’ll be doing a big cross-Canada tour in early 2015 with the full seven-piece version of the band. More on that later.

Handmade Blade is a recently formed trio with Peggy Lee (cello) and Aram Bajakian (guitar). We did our first couple of gigs earlier this fall, and it was a damn good time. The three of us all contribute original material to the project. Looking forward to working more with these two.

The Sands also involves Peggy Lee, and is the latest incarnation of her long-standing collaboration with vocalist Julie McGeer. I’ve been playing with these folks for a few years now, and am happy to announce that we’ve just released a full-length! The album is called Beast To Bone. It was produced by Jesse Zubot, and features a pretty sweet band.
Here’s the lineup:
Julie McGeer-lead vocals, Peggy Lee-piano and cello, JP Carter-trumpet and effects, Paul Rigby-guitar, Cole Schmidt-guitar, Darren Parris-bass, Jeremy Berkman-trombone, Barry Mirochnik-drums, Debra Jean Creelman-backup vocals, Jesse Zubot-violin.

The concert is called Rippled Modality, and will feature Anne La Berge (Amsterdam), Lori Freedman (Montreal), Lisa Miller, Chris Gestrin, Jesse Zubot, Mike Dowler, Peggy Lee, and the Mind of a Snail Puppet Co.

The following week, I’ll be playing with Inhabitants at the Fox Cabaret in Vancouver. The show is on Thursday Nov 27, and is being dubbed Jazz is the New Punk! I’ll be opening the night with a solo set. Also on the bill is Elizabeth Fischer’s DarkBlueWorld.

So pretty busy times in November!

December will also be busy, but in a much different way. I’ll be heading down to Dallas, TX for the Roller Derby World Cup! I’ll be there supporting Buffy Sainte Fury (a.k.a. my partner Karlene Harvey) and Team Canada take on the best national derby teams from around the world. 30 countries will be represented. Very excited about this!

After the tournament, Karlene and I will be flying down to South America! We’re planning to visit Peru, Bolivia and Chile on this three-week adventure. It’s the first time down there for both of us, and we’re a little nervous, but mostly just super stoked!

Cheers,
JP
